Classic Literature: Little House in the Big Woods
Since fall has arrived, I decided to read one of my favorite cozy classics: The Little House series. If you don’t know, the hit show Little House on the Prairie was based on these books.
The first book in the series, called Little House in the Big Woods, follows a little girl named Laura. The book is set in the 1870s, which is right in the middle of the American Westward Expansion. Laura and her family live somewhere in rural Wisconsin. In Laura’s words, she lives right in the middle of the woods. No neighbors, and there are trees as far as the little girl can see.
The book just follows her life throughout the year and experiences she has. So the book starts in fall, when it is harvest season. We see the hunt Laura's Pa brings home, and all the preparations Laura and her family make for winter, such as smoking/salting jerky and storing vegetables in the attic.
A common theme throughout the book is that when her Pa comes home from hunting everyday, he tells Laura and her sister Mary stories. Sometimes the stories are from when he was a child, and sometimes he tells recent stories. I think it’s really sweet when this happens in the book because Laura and Mary are so engrossed in his storytelling.
After the harvest season has ended, we get to see Christmas for Laura's family. Her Aunt and Uncle and cousins come to visit in a sled! For Christmas, Laura’s Ma cooks up delicious food, and Laura gets a long candy cane and a ragdoll as a present.
While the book follows daily life for Laura, such as learning to churn butter or helping her Ma, it also tells about special events that happen in her life, such as Laura going into town for the first time.
I love this book series because it’s so easy to just get comfy and read. There’s nothing hard to understand in this book, but I think it’s really interesting to see how people lived back in the 1870s. So if you’re looking for a cozy book to read this autumn, give this series classic a try!
