Venom by Donny Cates

 Hello all,

This is Alton and I'm going to be giving my opinion on the Venom series by Donny Cates. One of the reasons I liked this series so much is because the complicated relationship between Venom and Eddie Brock is really shown as Eddie faces his problems with or without venom. Some examples can be seen in volumes 1 and 3 where we see Eddie's reliance on Venom to fulfil his needs all the time, transition into his mind being so attached to Venom that even after losing Venom temporarily Eddies mind still uses the thoughts of Venom screaming in Eddies ear to get Eddie to make the right choices.

I think one of the other reasons I enjoyed this take on Venom so much is because of the realism that Donny Cates brings to the story. When Venoms thoughts get too loud Eddie drowns them out with anti-psychotics. Small details like this that add another layer of realism to Eddies character are what make it so easy to think of yourself in Eddies position and allow much more entertainment to be added to the reading experience.

The final reason I enjoyed reading this series so much is because of how it really focuses on the development of Eddies life as he keeps moving. We start with Eddie barely scraping by, making money from photos of crime scenes to finding him later in the series finally coming to terms with his wife's death, raising his son and building a relationship with him, and saving others' lives instead of just saving his own. This shows how deeply thought-out Eddie Brocks character and his development throughout the series really is.

Thanks for reading,

Alton

  1. I never read the venom comics, however I did watch the movies and I'm sure they are very different but the story was still interesting. I may read the comics to see how different they really are.

  2. I just know Venom from the movies, this sounds like more of an interesting storyline tho.
