Absolute Superman
The Absolute DC Universe is supposed to be a much more grim and darker version of the normal DC universe. I decided to read the series, set in this universe, about Superman who is usually seen as a bright, strong "boy scout", that flies around metropolis and saves the city. In the Absolute universe, Superman helps the poor and the groups of people and workers oppressed by the large corrupt organization called Lazarous Corp.
The origins of Superman slightly differ from the normal origins. The comic starts by showing a scene, on Krypton, Superman is just a boy named Kal El and Kal's parents are waiting for rain that has already been paid for, because on Krypton rain is artificial. Kal was a part of the laboring class as both his parents were extremely bright but were not allowed to join the high-ranking Science League, or the Klerics, due to his parents speaking out against the use of their world and its natural resources. It is discovered that Krypton will soon die as a planet because of how the Klerics used the natural resources. The Klerics know immediately but do not tell the lower classes and reject Kal's parents helps with creating enough space vessels to get more people off Krypton. Kal and his family create a spaceship that can get most of their loved ones off planet. They all take off and are separated but the adaptive spaceship saves them. Through a turn of events Superman is the only Kryptonian to get off Krypton. After numerous years of wandering the universe, Kal's ship locates earth and heads towards it, supercharging Kals cells in the light of the yellow sun and giving him the abilities he has in all the other comics.
The Kent family is out in the fields they work and are talking about how because they refused to sell to Lazarous Corp., they are getting no rain because they think Lazarous has placed weather controlling drones above their field and they are praying for a miracle. Kals ship then crashes onto their field and Kals AI suit, Sol, interferes with the drones and they are brought down from the sky leaving only a downpour that lasted for days. The story continues to show Kal brought shoved away from the Kents by Lazarous Corp. and shows Superman fighting against injustice.
I wanted to talk about the striking similarities that I saw between the Krypton that was about to be destroyed, and Earth. I decided to include the scenes about rainfall on Krypton and on Earth because the showed that and other similarities that I saw. Many other similarities are seen with the corrupt political figures and the harsh enforcement of the law through unnecessary violence that gives us the strikingly serious story and version of Superman.
